“WATER IS LIFE” WELL: FAITH CHURCH, CAP-HAITIEN

Working in collaboration with compassionate churches and groups, ISA installed a well at Faith Church. Now, a community of over 2,500 people has a local source of safe drinking water.

HAITI’S WATER CRISIS

The lack of clean, drinkable water in Haiti has been stealing hopes and lives for more than a century. Water, the most basic of all human necessities, is luxurious, scarce, and expensive. According to a study conducted by The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice, “close to 70 percent [do] not have direct access to potable [drinkable] water.”

Many gather water from 'garbage-filled' rivers to supply their daily household needs, including cooking and drinking. Most water sources are contaminated with human waste because of the absence of sewage sanitation systems. Intestinal worms cause debilitating side effects in children and adults. Unsanitary water exposes men, women, and children to the germs that cause cholera, typhoid, hepatitis, chronic diarrhea, and other waterborne diseases. Waterborne illnesses are the origin of more than half of the deaths every year.

“Access to safe water and adequate sanitation services has proved to be one of the most efficient ways of improving human health,” according to the UN World Water Development Report. Clean water saves lives, reduces suffering, and improves the quality of life.

ISA provides clean drinking water to communities through our “Water Is Life” program.
