Gregg Shaffer Legacy Project

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” -John 11:25-26

GREGG SHAFFER, June 15, 1952 - February 1, 2020

Gregg Scott Shaffer, ISA founding director and mentor, passed away on February 1, 2020, at his home in Rockville, MD after battling brain cancer for 13 months.  His legacy is deep and immeasurable.

Gregg Shaffer touched our lives in countless ways with his magnetic presence, perceptive words, and corny humor. For many of us, he pointed the way to a life with Jesus Christ.

Of the many things that marked Gregg’s life, what stands out most was his commitment to multiplying his life into the lives of others. He always said that apart from God only two things will last: God's Word and people. He lived by this statement, committing the majority of his life to spending time with others and taking whatever opportunity he could to be a spiritual encouragement to them. He could strike up a conversation with absolutely anyone, and without being intrusive, turn the subject to Christ. As a result, God used him to bring many to know the Lord.

The vision Gregg treasured most was to build multiplying disciples who would reach the world for Christ, and he worked hard to equip those he discipled so that they could go and do the same. Over the last 18 years, he helped develop a ministry in Haiti with International Strategic Alliances. Along with Mike Van Hook, they created a disciple manual for young Haitian Christians. We know Gregg would want each person going through them to find the same confidence and life transformation he found. As these lessons are taught to succeeding generations of believers, people’s lives will be eternally changed, and to Gregg and our family, that is the best legacy there is!

Diane Shaffer

Gregg's devoted wife of 35 years

Over the past year, I have been discussing with Diane how ISA might honor Gregg's legacy in an appropriate way. We agreed that it needed to be something that would represent Gregg's 50 years of ministry and live on in the lives of others.

Early in our ministry in Haiti, Gregg and I recognized that nothing existed to effectively help new Christians and their churches to understand the basics of the Christian faith, so we earnestly set out to create a discipleship manual that would be tailor-made for their culture, language, and unique circumstances. We spent countless hours collaborating, and as we neared the final stages, work was interrupted when Gregg was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Gregg's family wants to take this to the finish line, so his legacy will live on.

We are in the final stage, and we need $6000 to complete it. Your donations will finance:

  • translation of the lessons into Haiti Creole,
  • printing and binding,
  • final design, and
  • training the initial group of 200 pastors and leaders.

Fertile Soil is a personal and small group discipleship training initiative designed to train believers in the basics of the Christian faith. It is an excellent resource for a church-wide discipleship program.

The lessons present the principles and practices for personal spiritual growth. It provides pastors and lay leaders with an effective training tool for discipleship making.

The print manual of "Fertile Soil: Your New Life with Jesus" will be available for distribution in the fall of 2021.

Gregg's life exerted an enormous influence on countless souls over five decades and across the United States, Haiti, and Asia. Gregg was the person that Christ used to help me come to faith in Him, to learn about ministry and discipleship, and to serve as a missionary in Haiti.

Gregg was one of my oldest, and dearest friends. He influenced me in many ways, and has been a role model for my Christian walk. I know he was very instrumental in the lives of people as far back as Junior High School. I look forward to seeing him again when I get to heaven.

I wish I could thank him in person for the words of encouragement, the mentorship, leadership, but most of all the true friendship from my Christian Brother. Gregg, your never-failing faith has touched my life in a way there are no words for me to explain. You have impacted my life profoundly and my heart is blessed because of you. Chesa and I send our love and our prayers to you, to Diane and your girls. We know our God is a Miraculous God, and He has you firmly in His arms. We love you.
